Finca El Mirador is located in one of the most remote areas in Huehuetenango. The Lopez family has been growing coffee in this area for approximately 38 years. Back when they started cultivating coffee, there were no roads around this region and they had to transport the coffee on horses and mules for three days to get it to the nearest town in order to sell it. Initially, coffee was seen as a crop, but with the new generation of farmers, it has become a passion. In 1999, Finca El Mirador won a high price for their cup quality, and this motivated them to strive for better agricultural practices and wet milling techniques, including better pruning, fertilization, and shade management.
We sourced this coffee through Primavera, who has developed a close relationship with the Lopez family. Primavera has also worked to modernize Finca El Mirador’s wet mill, as well as building new drying patios and constructing raised beds to continue the farm’s experimentation with processing methods.
