2021 marks the first year of serving Thuesman Rodriguez’s coffee, through our producer partner Juan Peña and his exporting company Cafexporto.
We have been working with Juan and his farm Hacienda La Papaya for four years now, ever since we served his coffee to take third in the United States Barista Championship in 2018, then second place with his coffee in 2020. Juan, who has a background in agronomy, has been working with associate producers in the mountainous Loja region to improve their coffee quality through farm practices, variety selection, and processing techniques.
Thuesman Rodriguez is a native of Loja, who began planting coffee at the age of 79. Through his tenacity and ancestral experience with the land, he has been able to work with the Cafexporto team over the past three years to improve his farm's fertilization and irrigation. Thuesman grows the Typica variety on his farm, a variety which we feel shines under the tutelage of these producers and their knowledge of what this coffee variety can yield in the cup.
We are consistently delighted with the flavors from this region of Ecuador, and Thuesman's coffee is no exception. Like many of the coffees we've experienced through Cafexporto, this coffee reminds us of the heirloom coffees of Ethiopia, with vibrant fruit flavors and a rich brown sugar sweetness.
