Darwin De Leon is a second generation coffee producer who manages his farm El Arrollo, as well as contributing his time as a leader of the ADIRSEC cooperative. Short for Asociaion de Desarrollo Microregional Los Altos del Arrollo Seco, ADIRSEC is made up of 28 smallholder producers in the Huehuetenango region of Guatemala.
Named for the arrollo, or stream, that runs through the farm, El Arrollo is home to shade trees for the benefit of the coffee trees, coupled with erosion management techniques. This lot of coffee is of the Caturra variety, which, along with good cup quality, can also be planted in higher densities, producing more fruit on smaller land holdings. This coffee is washed and sun-dried on patios, with the farm’s water source coming from the stream fed by a natural spring.
El Arrollo is a wonderful example of what Guatemalan coffees can offer in the cup - sweet and smooth dark chocolate flavors, soft fruit flavors, and a sweetness like brown sugar or caramel. As this coffee cools, we find hints of melon and cherry, with a refreshing finish.
