Earlier this week, Chach and I swung by Onus Donuts, owned and operated by our friend Juan Jimenez. Onus has been open since December down on the 400 block of State St, and pairs down to earth donuts with Dune coffee and espresso drinks. We also carry Onus donuts at Dune!
We’ve known Juan for some time, through his family’s restaurant Cajun Kitchen as well as Juan being kind enough to bring his dog Mariah by for us to adore. In between him making drinks and serving donuts to the folks that walked in, we got a chance to ask Juan some questions.
Describe your perfect morning coffee.
“Before I started Onus, I would walk to Dune on Anacapa with Mariah, order an oat cappuccino and a chocolate croissant, and enjoy both while sitting out on the patio. Now, when I come in to work, I set everything up for the day, then make myself an oat cappuccino. I think it’s a really comforting drink - it’s something I look forward to each morning.”
What’s something that motivates you, personally, or for your business?
“Customer service, being able to create a space where people are comfortable. I want people who come in to feel like this is their donut shop. Seeing children and families come in, and thinking about how this experience getting donuts might be something they remember in the future from their childhood. My hope is to contribute to this community where I was born and raised.”
Who is someone you look up to?
“My dad (Richard Jimenez, Sr, owner of Cajun Kitchen) has definitely been a big inspiration for me. Todd and Julia (Dune Coffee), who I look up to as starting from humble beginnings and growing their company into what it is today. Curt over at Foundation Press for all of his knowledge and expertise.”
Tell us about one of your memorable coffee experiences.
“I lived in San Francisco for a short while, and when I moved back to Santa Barbara, I visited Dune and noticed the quality and care happening behind the counter, all in this not-intimidating way. I think that was around when I started to drink coffee for the taste too, not just for the energy it gave me.”
Do you have a favorite coffee and donut pairing?
“Glazed old fashioned donut and a cappuccino - simple. I also love seeing an adult come in and buy a Fruity Pebbles donut or a Lucky Charms donut; it’s almost as if I’m getting to see them indulge their inner child.”
Onus just released a line of shirts in collaboration with Foundation Press and artist DJ Javier which can be purchased at their website, onusdonuts.com, or in store. You can also place orders for pickup on their website. Their hours are currently 7:30 AM to 2:30 PM Tuesday through Friday, and 8 AM to 3 PM Saturday and Sunday (closed on Mondays). For this weekend, they will be open for evening hours on Friday and Saturday, from 5 PM to 10 PM. Their blueberry and vegan Oreo donuts are equally my favorites.
